The fight to keep kauri dieback out of Warkworth's Parry Kauri Park

Ray Jansen speaks with John-Michael Swannix. The Kauri tree is one of the biggest/ oldest trees in the world that is going to slowly extinct if we don't do anything about the disease infecting it. This disease is called the kauri dieback, which has already spread throughout numerous parks and killed many trees. A specific park in Warkworth north of Auckland has a whole lot of kauri trees that they are trying to protect from the kauri dieback. Due to this problem, the President of the park, Ray Jensen has put broad walks and cleaning stations that help protect the park from the infection. Just like Jenny Marcroft and Mels Barton who have stated in one of there interviews about the kauri trees have said that the community should notice this, I believe that the council and the community should pay attention to these problems to stop our native kauri trees from dying of the Kauri Dieback disease/ infection. They could start by building broad walks and cleaning stations in areas where the disease hasn't spread to. This could be passed onto the government if the problem gets out of hand.

Government Decisions

I think that foreign landowners should not be allowed to sell NZ bottled water, simply because they might take all the credit when it becomes successful. That is my opinion, however, Marama Davidson (Green Party co-leader) had a lot to say about this. Her reason was a bit similar to mine, she stated that we to make sure that we are not giving away this resource to foreign land buyers to sell to the international corporations that reap profits from the expense of New Zealand's best interests.

What it means to be cyber smart and why it is important.
  • Being cyber smart means being safe and knowing right from wrong while surfing on the internet.

Why is it important to be cyber smart?
  • So you can keep out of trouble online and in real life. An online example would be to be positive if you’re on social media to other people or even your friends.

Two things you learnt about being cyber smart and how you could apply it to your own life
  • That cyberbullying is an actual crime and you could actually go to prison for it. What I could learn from this would be to comment or talk positively on any kind of social media or just online.

A personal strategy a young person can do to help themselves if they are being cyberbullied
  • A strategy a young person could use would be to talk to someone in either their family or a close friend before it gets out of hand.

An interpersonal strategy a young person can do to help their friend who is being cyberbullied
  • They could help their friend ignore the cyberbully by putting their focus on other things like playing outside, playing a game or something that helps their friend take it off their mind.

A personal strategy a young person who finds themselves bullying other young people can do to help build their self-esteem and change their behaviour
  • I could try and talk to them and try and understand what their problem is and help to solve it. And if that does not work try and bribe them by buying them food, and if that doesn't work try and ask someone that's very close to him to help him sort his problem out.

Tips to give to the year 6s about how they could become cyber smart.
  • Stay away from bad ads that occur whenever you're watching something or playing games.
  • Talk to someone whenever you're getting cyberbullied

Survivor blog reflection

Problems we faced while surviving were having a lack of clothes, getting resources and food and lastly the pirates that attacked us. We solved the lack of clothes problem by getting some off the people on the island. Getting resources and food was pretty hard but in the end, the people on the island helped us gather them. The solution to the pirate problem would be to fight back. I made the decisions. I was the one who made the decisions because they voted me as the leader. We tried voting, but that didn't work so we just picked a random person in our group. We're linking this to our next topic about the government.
